Completing his boilermaker apprenticeship in NZ, Ryan has worked in the fabrication industry for over fifteen years, both there and in Australia since his move over ‘the ditch’ in 2007. Workshop supervisory positions with major engineering firms have given him a very clear and practical understanding of the challenges faced by WIA customers whom he visits in his role as Equipment Product Specialist for northern Queensland, based in tropical Mackay.
Mine maintenance and fabrication are the major business activities in his territory, and Ryan’s technical knowledge and hands-on background are just what his customers are looking for. Two areas of particular interest to Ryan are welding quality management and work health and safety – both extremely topical in the competitive fabrication industry.
In his previous roles he was responsible for quality management in large welding facilities, and supervised the adherence to principles such as traceability, procedures and staff job competency. Customers can be assured that he is well qualified to train their staff in the use of the latest welding equipment from WIA, and to advise on the seamless introduction of new procedures into existing welding quality management systems, such as ISO 9001 and AS/NZS ISO 3834.
Ryan is also very comfortable promoting Miller equipment to his customers as it has an outstanding reputation for safety, particularly in the extreme environments found in mining. Having worked in companies where each individual’s commitment to, and responsibility for safety was paramount, encouraging safe work practices comes second nature to him.
Communication is always an essential part of leadership, and Ryan brings with him the ease of conversation which made him a great workshop supervisor. He understands through experience his customers’ needs and the pressures they work under. Deadlines are one of these pressures. "These days everyone wants things done quickly, whether it’s finishing a project on time or returning a call or email" he said. "This puts pressure on the fabricator and we are here to try and help him with great equipment and on-site support".
When time allows, Ryan will be found out at the reef with his mates in his boat, looking for the elusive Spanish mackerel. A great fighter on the line, this fish promises an excellent return on investment – rather like Ryan himself.
