Although starting his career as an apprentice in the aircraft industry, fabricating with light and exotic materials, Craig’s further experience and trade qualifications in heavy engineering and fabrication supporting the Queensland mining industry means he brings a great breadth of knowledge and experience to his role in the WIA sales team. As the Northern Queensland End Market Specialist, Craig’s territory extends far north from Gladstone and inland to Mt Isa.
With the state’s focus moving from mining to oil and gas, it’s not surprising that one of Craig’s most satisfying customer experiences was related to the Curtis Island LNG project in the Gladstone area. Always on the lookout for ways to make his customers' job easier, Craig realised that the need to have mechanical testing completed on welding wire after it was delivered was becoming a constraint for a customer contracting in this sector, and interrupting workflow and productivity. So Craig arranged to have each order of WIA flux cored wire mechanically tested and certified prior to delivery, ready for immediate use by the welders on site. A two-year contract was his reward for excellent proactive customer support.
Although some of Queensland’s industry sectors were relatively new to Craig, he has embraced the learning process and quickly established a valuable reputation in response to customers’ demands for more efficient production. Sugar mills, for example, employ a unique process for hard facing their grey cast iron crushing rollers to maintain their surface roughness and Craig’s technical know-how and advice now supports customers for optimum wire selection in a range of tough operating conditions.
The proud owner of two small boats himself, the shipbuilding and repair industries based around Cairns are close to his heart. As a keen fisherman and author of a weekly column in the local newspaper, Craig often finds his customer visits start with a chat about ‘where they are biting’ before moving to the more serious business of supplying the best quality welding equipment and consumables for the job.
